Post Date:11/09/2017 5:30 PM

Lancaster City Council Member Angela Underwood-Jacobs recently addressed a number of attendees at the Los Angeles City College (LACC) Guardian Scholars’ Meet the Experts program. The November 3 event introduced current and former foster youth to many intriguing career opportunities, while offering insights into how to begin and sustain a successful career. Council Member Underwood-Jacobs participated in the panel discussion, alongside a number of other experts to share her career journey as well as her secrets for success.

Attendees engaged in a question and answer period with panelists, and received knowledgeable responses to assist them in their discovery of the career path that is best suited for them.

“As a City Council Member and a local business woman, I wholeheartedly understand the value of hard work and the unwavering support of others – which has helped me get to where I am today,” said Council Member Angela Underwood-Jacobs. “It is events like this that serve as a reminder that our youth are our future – and afford myself and others the opportunity to ensure that ‘together we rise’ to success, regardless of where we’ve come from.”

In addition to the panel discussion, attendees were able to network with Council Member Underwood-Jacobs, to learn more about her and her journey, as well as garner further career advice.

“We are all born with an innate desire to learn and excel, and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to help nurture the minds of these youth who otherwise may not have had such an opportunity without the existence of this wonderful program,” added Council Member Underwood-Jacobs.

Guardian Scholars is a program offered by LACC to improve the percentage of foster youth attending college (currently between two and five percent), by supporting their needs in pursuing higher education -- to help change the outcomes of foster youth for the better and pave a path for future generations. The close of the event left those in attendance feeling inspired and encouraged to pursue both higher education and a career.
