Wilderness Photography Walk with Lee Bergthold

The Lancaster Museum/Art Gallery presents a free special talk and workshop with documentary photographer and wilderness survival expert Lee Bergthold Saturday, June 20th at 10 am at the Prime Desert Woodland Interpretive Center. Bergthold will speak about his treks across the deserts of California and Nevada and what he looks for when documenting his expeditions. The talk will be followed by an excursion along the trails so participants can gain some hands-on experience with their own photography.

The event is presented in conjunction with Bergthold’s solo exhibition, “An Unforgiving Land: The Trek Photography of Lee Bergthold” running through July 26, 2009 at the Lancaster Museum/Art Gallery. The exhibition chronicles Bergthold’s thirty-two day trek to trace the Hastings Cutoff, the infamous “shortcut” that put the Donner Party behind schedule and caused them to attempt their fateful crossing of the Sierra Nevada too late in the season. The beauty and the brutality of the land are captured elegantly by Bergthold, as are the effects on those few who attempt to survive in such an inhospitable place.
