A favorite among National Geographic presenters, Joel Sartore’s entertaining shows blend humor with powerful conservation messages and award-winning photography of wildlife and the places they inhabit. During the LPAC presentation, Sartore turns his lens on us, asking whether we value wildlife and the natural environment independent of the immediate resources they offer – with a focus on how drought and fire impact human and animal ecosystems, especially in a desert community like the Antelope Valley. With a question and answer session following Sartore’s engaging multimedia presentation and a book signing in the lobby, this powerful evening will leave a lasting impression.

Over twenty years of experience (17 with National Geographic Society) have allowed Sartore to cover everything from the remote Amazon rain forest to beer-drinking, mountain-racing firefighters in the United Kingdom. His March 2000 “National Geographic” cover story – “Madidi: Will Bolivia Drown Its New National Park?” – helped convince the Bolivian government to abandon its plans to build a large-scale hydroelectric dam that would have submerged a large portion of pristine forest.

A life-long Nebraskan, Sartore has authored several books including “Photographing Your Family,” “Face to Face with Grizzlies” and “Nebraska: Under a Big Red Sky.” Besides the work he has done for “National Geographic,” Sartore has completed assignments for “Time,” “Life,” “Newsweek,” “Sports Illustrated” and contributed to numerous book projects. His work has been the subject of several national broadcasts including “National Geographic’s Explorer,” the “NBC Nightly News,” “NPR’s Weekend Edition,” CNN's “Anderson Cooper 360” and an hour-long PBS documentary. Sartore is also a regular contributor on the CBS “Sunday Morning Show” with Charles Osgood.
