In 1999, United Way published a ground-breaking report entitled “A Tale of Two Cities,” which pointed out the growing gap between the haves and have-nots in our community. A decade later, a deep recession has erased much of our gains while soaring healthcare costs have put an even larger portion of the community at risk.
These troubling trends do not just affect those battling poverty. Every Antelope Valley region employer is also affected through increased costs, lower productivity and growing absenteeism.
On March 4th, United Way will share with you our latest report entitled “A Tale of Two Cities, One Future,” which updates key issues ten years later. And because research shows that cities and counties making more progress on reducing poverty actually grow faster and stronger, we will also share our vision for mobilizing the power of civic engagement to solve this problem in our communities.
