In May 2006, Lee Bergthold set off with three companions on a thirty-two day trek to trace the Hastings Cutoff, the infamous “shortcut” that put the Donner Party behind schedule and caused them to attempt their fateful crossing of the Sierra Nevada too late in the season. This exhibition features the documentary photography of Bergthold’s expedition through the deserts and mountains of Nevada, from Donner Springs on the Utah border to Battle Mountain - a distance of 340 miles. In these images, Bergthold reveals a landscape that few have witnessed since the great migrations across the Western United States in the 19th century. The beauty and the brutality of the land are captured elegantly by Bergthold, as are the effects on those few who attempt to survive in such an inhospitable place.
