Information Technology
The Information Technology (IT) Division is an integral component of City services. IT is primarily responsible for the implementation, support, and maintenance of all City computer and telecommunications equipment and computer software.
IT is responsible for driving innovative process improvements and providing technical support for implementing new systems. For example, IT recently assisted the Development Services Department with implementing an automated permitting system, which allows citizens the added convenience of applying for certain types of permits online, enabling them to bypass physically visiting City Hall and saving valuable time and money.
IT also helped the Development Services graffiti crews implement a new project management software. By utilizing tablets and removing antiquated paper processes, crews can now communicate their workflow status instantaneously. This innovation alone represented a 300% increase in productivity.
In addition, IT encompasses the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Section, which is responsible for curating maps and maintaining geospatial data. Utilizing GIS lets City staff visualize, question, analyze, and interpret data to better understand relationships, patterns, and trends. GIS is used across the City in many functions such as Emergency Preparedness, Communications, Planning, Economic Development, Traffic, Development Services and Utilities.
Some of the future projects for IT include improving interfaces between City enterprise applications, enhancing network security, further digitalizing work processes, and replacing outdated hardware while utilizing virtualization.
