What can you do?
  • Secure your property by not leaving items that can be easily carried, wheeled or otherwise moved away unattended; even if it is just in your yard.
  • Close your garage doors and lock them when you are not in the garage (even if you are in the house).
  • If you are leaving your residence, even for just a couple of minutes, close and lock your doors and windows.
  • Lock your vehicle when you leave it, even if it is in your driveway.
  • Roll your vehicle windows up when it is unattended. DO NOT LEAVE PARKED VEHICLE WINDOWS OPEN SLIGHTLY FOR VENTALATION! Again, even in your driveway.
  • When you are out and about, whether walking or getting ready to exit your vehicle take a moment to assess your environment. Be alert for people exhibiting behavior that is strange to you, or conditions that seem unusual. If you don’t like the way something looks, it is probably for a reason. Follow your instincts and leave the area.
  • If your vehicle doors do not automatically lock when you drive, manually lock them while driving.
  • When you stop for fuel, do not leave the windows down in your vehicle, close them and if you are going inside to pay, lock your doors.
  • If you are having a disagreement with a family member, significant other, or neighbor, walk away and discuss it when you are not angry or seek outside assistance if necessary. Domestic violence is a significant number in assault frequency.
  • TRUANCY! No minor (under age 18) who is subject to compulsory education or to compulsory continuation education shall loiter, idle, wander or be in or upon the public streets, highways, roads, alleys, parks, playgrounds or other public grounds, public places, public buildings, places of amusement, or eating places, vacant lots or any unsupervised place during the hours of seven-thirty a.m. and two p.m. on days when school is in session. Sign up to check your child's grades and daily attendance through the school or district's website.  This technology allows parents to check grades and attendance in near real-time.  This is a great tool to stay on top of what your child is doing!
  • CURFEW! No minor (under age 18) shall loiter about the public streets, avenues, alleys, parks or other public places between the hours of ten (10) p.m. and six a.m. of the following day.  If the minor is in one of these areas during these hours, and not with a parent or legal guardian, they are subject to being cited.
  • PARTIES! If you give your minor permission to attend a party, escort them to and from the party. Also, meet the adult who will be present to supervise the party. Many of the minors hurt or killed in Lancaster have been at parties that were not properly supervised. It is every parent's responsibility to protect their child from getting in a situation where they could be injured or killed.  Minors going to, attending, or returning from parties are not exempt from the curfew ordinance.
  • If you see something suspicious, report it to law enforcement. LAW ENFOCEMENT IS NOT TOO BUSY TO ADDRESS YOUR CONCERN. It is better to have a false alarm than a victim.
