DUI Deaths are Preventable.

City of Lancaster and the California Highway Patrol have set up a collaborative initiative dedicated to making California’s roadways safer by curbing impaired driving.

Research reveals a disturbing trend: a decline in safe driving and an uptick in hazardous citations, especially among inexperienced drivers, millennials, and Gen X drivers. Over the past seven years, Lancaster has witnessed an alarming increase in hazardous citations and traffic fatalities due to impaired drivers.

With a rich repository of resources and hands-on experiences, our Drive Sober initiative aims to raise awareness of safer driving habits and shed light on the consequences of negligence on the road. This initiative is funded by the CHP Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program.

Residents are invited to partake in this citywide movement, which will run through June 2024, in the hopes that the effects of the campaign will positively impact our community for years to come! From sharing personal narratives to attending workshops on driver safety, there are opportunities for everyone to learn and engage in safer driving practices.

The cost of impaired driving

From legal fees, insurance hikes, to restricted licenses, and potential jail time – the real cost of impaired driving ranges from $13,500 to $25,000. A DUI conviction can also stay on your record for 10 long years.

It's not just about the costs and legal consequences. It's about the safety of our community, our friends, and our families. Take the pledge to drive sober.

Tips for responsible driving

✅ Plan your safe ride home before you start the party, choose a non-drinking friend as a designated driver.

✅ If someone you know has been drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel. Help them arrange a sober ride home.

✅ If you drink, do not drive for any reason. Call a taxi, a ride-hailing service, or a sober friend.

✅ If you’re hosting a party where alcohol will be served, make sure all guests leave with a sober driver.

✅ Always buckle-up. It’s your best defense against impaired drivers on the road.

✅ If you see an impaired driver on the road, have a passenger in your vehicle dial 911, and give the dispatcher your location, speed, and details about the dangerous driver on the road.
