Come join the City's Public Safety Office for their first Community Presentation of the year! This month's topic of Emergency Preparedness will give you lots of important information on why you should be prepared for any disaster that may arise, and how to do it.
Assembling a disaster kit, creating a family plan, selecting and using a fire extinguisher, when and how to shut off your utilities, mitigating hazards in the home, special considerations for children, elderly and disabled, how to prepare for your pets, what to do after-the-fact, post-disaster assistance from various governmental and non-profit agencies, sheltering-in-place, and more will be covered, in the context of an all-hazards approach (earthquake, fire, flash flood, extended power outage, terrorist attack, etc.). Tip-sheets on all the topics covered will be provided for attendees to take home with them and apply the information learned.
When a major disaster strikes, citizens in the area will find themselves essentially on their own, with limited or no ability for emergency personnel (fire, Sheriff’s, etc.) to respond due to damaged roads, fallen debris and other hazards, and even just the sheer inundation of calls for service. It is imperative that you know what to do and are prepared to fend for yourself during those critical first few days until emergency responders can get into your neighborhood. Whether you live in the middle of town or on the outskirts, on the flat of the desert or up in the hills near the lakes and valleys, or even if you move out of the area, the information provided at this presentation will be valuable to you, your family, your neighbors, your relatives, your friends, and your co-workers.
The presentation is FREE and is open to all members of the public, regardless of residence. This presentation will also be available live and after-the-fact on both Time Warner Channel 28 and streaming on the City's website here (Microsoft Silverlight, available for download free here, is required to watch online). In the meantime, the tip-sheets can be downloaded from the Public Safety Office's Emergency Preparedness page, using the links at the left of the page.
