Prime Desert Woodland Preserve Gateway Accessibility & Beautification Project
Please read below about the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve Gateway Accessibility & Beautification Project and then take this survey.
What is the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve Gateway Accessibility & Beautification Project?
The proposed Project is located at the entrance to the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve, a popular public open space operated by the City of Lancaster, at 35th St. W and W Ave K8. These roadway segments were identified as recommended “Safe Routes to School” for area students to walk or roll to Nancy Cory Elementary School. The Project area is entirely within Nancy Cory’s enrollment area. The school is connected to the Preserve via public roads (W Ave K-4 to 30th St W, to W Ave K-8) and via trails directly into the Preserve from the southwest area of the school property.
Meandering, Landscaped Sidewalks, with Curb Cuts and Crosswalks.
The Project will create (or upgrade) meandering sidewalks along both sides of the ½ mile approach to the Preserve entrance from both roadways, using drought-tolerant plants to add beauty and interest, as well as to provide habitat for desert animals and birds. The new walkways will include trees and/or shade structures to provide relief from the heat for those walking or rolling along the sidewalks. Additional curb cuts will improve the ability of those with strollers or wheelchairs to access the sidewalks. The Project adds new crosswalks at W Ave K-8 and 32nd St W. for children walking to Nancy Cory Elementary School, as well as all those walking to the Preserve or just strolling in the new beautified sidewalks.
Wider, Buffered Bike Lanes.
The existing narrow bike lanes along both roadways will be widened and newly painted two- or three-foot buffers will be added, to comply with current City standards for Class 2 Bike Lanes, and to allow bicyclists to ride more safely.
The Project also replaces the stop-sign-controlled intersection of 35th St. W and W Ave K8 at the entrance to the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve) with an attractive, landscaped traffic circle (the new “Gateway”), designed to beautify, provide habitat, and slow traffic to make it safer for more area residents to use active transportation modes to access the Preserve.
More On-Street Parking
The Project provides new on-street parking spaces to augment spaces inside the Preserve. This will reduce spillover parking impacts on nearby residents. An additional shade structure will be located adjacent to the entrance, to provide a sheltered waiting area for a proposed Antelope Valley Transit Authority transit stop, to provide bus service to the Preserve for special events.
Project Timeline: When funding is identified, the Project will have a completion goal of June 30, 2025.
