SEE AND BE SEEN Scavenger Hunt comes to a close with big wins for participants and local support
The month-long active transportation Scavenger Hunt ended May 31, 2021.
The City of Lancaster’s SEE AND BE SEEN Scavenger Hunt ended on May 31 after a successful month-long effort that encouraged community engagement and safe transportation.
Throughout May, participants completed challenges in the Scavify app such as leaving a review for a local business, biking or walking around the City, finding hidden QR codes along the BLVD, and snapping photos or videos at specific locations in Lancaster. Each completed challenge awarded participants points to win gift cards to local businesses and cash grand prizes.
With 114 challenges participants could complete, the SEE AND BE SEEN Scavenger Hunt gathered more than 150 participants who completed more than 2,000 total challenges. Each of the Hunt’s top three winners earned more than 1,000 points (out of a possible 1,165) and completed more than 90% of the offered challenges.
After a very close race to the finish line, Michael E. Wilson’s consistent participation earned him first place and the $1,000 grand prize. Nick Parada and his son Tommy took second place and were awarded $500. Catherine Jones rounded out third place and won $250.
“This is the first time we’ve held a Scavenger Hunt that promoted safe transportation and supported local businesses. The City of Lancaster is excited about the amount of resident participation we saw,” said City of Lancaster Councilmember Raj Mahli. “We hope residents of all ages learned something new from this fun and creative program about pedestrian and bicyclist safety in Lancaster.”
Funding for the SEE AND BE SEEN program is provided by a grant from OTS, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Scavenger Hunt prizes were made possible through the generous support of its sponsors: The BLVD Association, the Antelope Valley Transit Authority (AVTA), and the Boulevard Flooring Emporium.
The City of Lancaster partnered with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to develop and promote an active transportation safety and healthy living program. After focusing the City’s educational efforts on its signal cabinet wrap campaign in 2019, Lancaster received an additional grant in 2020 to advance a K-12 active transportation education curriculum that was employed in local schools. Lancaster also hosted a student signal cabinet wrap art contest and announced the winners in April 2021.
